Product of the week: Print On Demand Pet Bandanas

Do people REALLY spend money on pet bandanas with funny sayings/designs?

You bet they do!

For the same reason that people spend money on shirts with funny sayings/designs:

• To make a statement.
• To express their individuality or personality.
• As a conversation starter.
• Or any combination of the above.

Google Trends data shows that there’s been constant interest in this product in the past 5 years.

What’s even better is that there’s an uptick in searches since the beginning of 2020.

Let’s take a look:

Just like most products, there’s a significant increase in searches around November-December, most likely because people buy gifts for their loved ones (including pets).

But it’s not just in Q4 that people open the pocketbook for their pets.

Market Watch showed people were expected to spend $1.7 BILLION on their pets last Valentine’s Day.

And according to Money, people spend $63/year on gifts for their pets, more than they spend on pet insurance!

So we know for sure there’s a demand for this type of product.

And we can get them from a Print on Demand site like Gooten.

But… can you make profit selling pet bandanas, and if yes, how much?Let’s use the Digital Traffic Ace Dropshipping Calculator to see how much we could make in 6 months, assuming a conservative number of 10 sales per day.

Cost of goods starts at $5.90 (per Gooten).

Here’s a 6-month sales projection, assuming $9 spent in ads per sale, and a sale price of $20 (or $19.99)

 

Some numbers to pay attention to:

  • $36,000 in sales revenue.
  • $9,000 in profit (after ad/product costs).
  • A margin of 25% (not bad at all!).

Obviously you can play around with the numbers to see different scenarios.

Stick with me though, because in a moment I’m gonna share a couple of thoughts on how you can increase your sales and profit :).

But first… now that we’ve seen the numbers, let’s discuss a few pros and cons of selling dog bandanas.

Pros:

  • Low price point, ideal for impulse purchases.
  • Low cost of goods.
  • Easy to test a large number of designs.
  • Target market can be easily identified.
  • Not exactly a mainstream product like t-shirts, so you might expect slightly less competition.
  • Print on Demand product made in the US, which is a great selling point.

Cons:

  • A winning design might get copied by competitors.
  • Fairly low margins/profit potential (the money will be made in volume sales).
  • Might have to test a bunch of designs before finding a winner (but this applies to all products).

So how can we potentially increase our profit?

If you have a product that’s selling well, one of the easiest ways to increase your profit is to SCALE!

(See my note about “volume” above.) 

If you’ve reached 10 sales a day, there’s nothing stopping you from reaching 15, 20, 25, or even more sales per day.

In addition to scaling, you can also increase your Average Order Value (AOV) by adding an up sell to your offer.

For example… someone buying a pet bandana might also be interested in a pet bed.

And if we look at Google Trends, we can see there’s some demand there :).

 

And yes, you can also easily create/sell Print on Demand pet beds.
